Terry’s Story: Finding Purpose Again

At 78 years old, Terry has spent much of his life caring for others. For years he was the dedicated carer for his wife, always putting someone else first. Even today, helping people comes naturally to him.
Before moving into Lark View Care Home, Terry had been living in another care setting where he became withdrawn and disengaged. The hobbies and routines that once shaped his days slowly disappeared. He could no longer enjoy gardening the way he used to and he began to lose confidence in himself. Proud of his years serving in the Navy, Terry had always valued routine, responsibility and feeling useful. Without that, he started to feel as though he had lost his sense of purpose.
When Terry arrived at our home, the team took time to truly get to know him. Rather than focusing only on care needs, they focused on who Terry was as a person, what mattered to him and what brought him happiness.
Conversations with Terry quickly revealed his love for gardening and being active. Staff encouraged him to spend time outdoors again, giving him opportunities to help care for the terrace area and planting spaces around the building. What started as small tasks soon became something he looked forward to every day.
Last summer, Terry helped grow flowers, fruit and vegetables within the home gardens. Staff supported him to work at his own pace, helping rebuild both his confidence and mobility along the way. Being outdoors again, getting his hands in the soil and seeing the results of his work gave him a renewed sense of achievement.
We recognised how important it was for Terry to feel included and needed. With this, the wellbeing team regularly encouraged him to get involved in daily activities and tasks around the home, making sure he feels part of the community rather than simply living in it. He now proudly has his own name badge and is seen by residents and staff alike as part of the team.

The Lead Wellbeing Coordinator shared:
“I value Terry’s support with planned activities. He loves to get involved and really gets stuck in. He has become a Lark View landmark in his own right and really is part of the team. It fills me with great joy to see him carry out his own independence within the home.”
Alongside gardening, staff also encouraged Terry to try creative activities. Through painting sessions, he discovered a talent and passion he had never fully explored before. One of his paintings even helped raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the home’s in-house charity. For Terry, these opportunities have meant far more than simply keeping busy. They have helped him reconnect with himself, regain confidence and feel valued again.
A Senior Care Assistant said:
“I love seeing Terry be able to engage in his love with gardening, especially in the spring and summer months. This really is empowering to see.”
Terry’s journey shows the difference personalised support and genuine relationships can make. By listening to what mattered to him, encouraging independence and creating opportunities for him to do the things he loves, the home helped Terry rediscover purpose, confidence and joy in everyday life.
For families searching for care, Terry’s story is a reminder that a care home should feel more than safe. It should feel like a place where people can continue to grow, contribute and truly feel at home.
